Complete Streets vision for a rural village
This project was part of a series of participatory urban design pilots funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada and managed by Car Martin & Mikey Bennington at the Toronto Centre for Active Transportation. This project, undertaken collaboratively with local 'Communities in Action' sought to develop a 20 year vision for a County Road 21/ Highland street.

Haliburton Village is a small town in the heart of cottage country in central Ontario. It has a local population of 17,000 which swells to 45,000 in the summer. County Road 21/ Highland Street is one of two main roads that travel through Haliburton Village. This section of road serves the dual function of a local highway that connects Haliburton to other towns, and serves the village locally as a ‘linear neighbourhood’ with developments clustered along it and extending out from the downtown core. Thus the challenge was to create a space that accommodates pedestrians and local businesses while also allowing for efficient travel of vehicles through the village. Our objective with this project was to reach out to underrepresented local citizens such as residents who have limited mobility and youth who are too young to drive.
